Architecture is architecture when it is designed. But what is the specific gesture of architecture? What is specific about the architectural gesture is that every construction is an act of tracing. An act of writing about the world. Any project requires a plan, something written, so the plan becomes an analogous replica of the world. This is the space of writing, which, at the moment of writing a point, allows man to project a possible. When I write, I construct a map, idealizing and dematerializing the thing, creating signs, creating projects.

Alphabetic writing changes human habitation and, with it, architecture. With alphabetic writing, humankind submits to the identity of the logos, and in the same way, architecture submits to the same identity. Architecture is governed by aesthetic identity. This is the architecture that endures to this day, determined by its functionality, its constructability, and its beauty. Alphabetic writing invokes the birth of the philosophy of reason. This is the birth of the concept, and of currency. Beauty transforms the architectural object; it is valued not by means of use value but by an exchange value that transforms the object into an image. Alphabetic writing impelled things to become images.

In a society such as the one we defined above, based on changes in communication processes that modify distance and space, they also modify the form of writing and consequently architecture. The media not only determine the concept of truth and reality through public opinion but also modify the act of transmission and communication. To characterize the media, we must differentiate and analyze the differences between them. Likewise, we must identify the similarities and characteristics that determine them. Within the media, we find written media, such as the press, magazines, and even the information network; audio media, such as the telephone or radio; and finally, audiovisual media, such as television, cinema, and the Internet. Knowing and distinguishing between them allows us to search for the common element where they converge. They are media that contain a message between a sender and a receiver. The code can be binary, alphabetic, electromagnetic waves, or even a beam of light, but to connect with people, it needs a medium. It’s no longer just paper; the screen creates the possibility of sustaining the structure of media in the physical world. The screen reveals itself to us as a new element of contemporary everyday life that changes our behaviors, our relationships, and our idea of the city.
