Obfuscation.
pat. A state in which there is mental confusion and a disorder in the association of ideas.
I was creatively obnubilated. Between disorientation and admiration, I approached this as a visual medium. So I decided to work with this. The work consists of a construction of a 5-meter cube space, where there are no edges or corners. It’s an endless white-painted photograph with a tungsten tube installation on the ceiling. A white space with no visible boundaries filled with smoke by a glycerin machine that throws a dense fog into its interior.
The viewer entered the installation and suffered different reactions. For some, anguish. For others, peace. In a space similar to the interior of the clouds, the total whiteness erased all references to space. You could lose yourself in space and even lose your way out. You could be at peace. Losing the horizon, the physical reference to space, provokes a particular sensation in each person. For me, as a creator, it spoke of the state of being without a creative horizon.
The clouds, that familiar landscape from my past as a pilot, allowed me to express my moment as a creator. In search of a creative horizon, my first semester concluded. The work served to convey a state of anguish, which is validated by losing my way. The horizon doesn’t exist, and you cling to the security of an artifice to continue.
This is how I approached the second semester. With the feeling of obsession transmitted, I had to take the next step. What is it? On the plane, it’s about breaking out of the clouds and regaining my visual reference. This simple gesture is simply seeing. Seeing the world and seeing the place where I am framed as a being. Seeing, something basic for any sighted person, became a gift of the senses. Seeing a horizon on the plane means regaining my reference to the world.
