Thinking Space

The theme of the workshop was the intervention of historical constructions, the city Cartagena and the place the wall. The wall was a limit. A defensive element but at the same time exclusion. There’s someone we do not want to let in. But a historical element modifies its meaning by changing the political and social context on which it acts. The approach of the project of the wall is to give a contemporary use to a historical construction. The wall has to be intervened. The way I decided to intervene is through the museum. The museum is a space containing objects that show or question certain things. In this case it would not contain objects of art. It is a museum of the perception of the reality of the city. My proposal was to create a museum on the representation of reality through the passage of time.

The Wall is a space for reflection on the way we represent reality. The way I chose to do the tour is linear. Perception of time and therefore of history is a line. Before, now and after. A straight line that frames the historical path of the perception of reality. In this way the route begins with the first historical engravings on the wall. Maps mapped from the time of the conquest to the colony. The vision of the Spanish world is reflected on the wall and we cross the line of time until arriving at the representation that was made in the colony. We continue advancing in the route and in the time and we arrive at the own representation of the photography. With it, it ceased to be an interpretation to become a historical document. In this part we see the history of urban development of the city. We see how modernity was renaming the wall and changed its meaning. All this could only lead us to the screen. To real-time photography. We see a point where gigantic television screens show the image of a video that cameras monitor on the outside. That is, a series of small cameras embedded in the exterior of the wall record what happens outside. It is my way of showing the disarticulation of the limit of the architectural fact of the screen. Inside the wall or the boundary disappears and shows us what happens outside in real time. The wall is transparent inside but outside excludes. A way of reflecting on the screen and what it does when modifying the inhabit of the contemporary city. Finally we reach the same wall itself. Seeing the wall as ruin after reflecting on the representation of reality, we understand that simply inhabiting is mediated by interpretation and always tends to movement. The museum becomes a way to tell the story of my comprehension, my search, my question. It is an instrument that distances the everyday from the home and shows it in a plane of reflection and questioning.
