IMAGE AS AN ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENT

The search for the meaning of living is marked by an understanding of the world of images. In this way, the television becomes a medium that deconstructs the concepts of family, individual, and space-time. I believe this deconstructing capacity must be revisited by architecture. I will therefore address some points that I consider vitally important in addressing this issue. It is clear that today the television plays a fundamental role in the family and, consequently, in the home. We need only observe how this device has replaced social ties at the familial level. The television has become a companion for housewives, replacing, in a way, their need for social interaction. This fact is constantly refined and is addressed as the possibility of interacting with devices increases to proportions that warrant a careful consideration of what this fact means. The social areas of the home have lost importance, being replaced by a space for watching television. The television hall takes on a vital role, becoming the most used space within the home. This is where the family unit gathers, abandoning traditional values of family interaction. Now, families gather to watch television. Children prefer video games, because in the bleak city atmosphere, they find an escape from everyday reality.

An architectural code reflects and determines the social order of public and private space, as well as the psychological sense of being. This code has been gradually augmented by the video code. Through elements such as televisions, bedrooms, families, social classes, and public and private domains are connected. In this way, by architecturally connecting different regions, video fulfills an architectural function. This disruption of human conditions of distance, through information networks, interactivity, and virtual reality, represents a rupture in the value of presence. Architecture has been a symbol of presence throughout history, and in this way, it is also a symbol of reality. A presence that is confused in its authenticity, which presents us with new and alternative visions of reality. A double-edged reality, a reality that denies the traditional values of presence but, at the same time, generates new meanings. Video demonstrates, with its ability to present alternative possibilities, allowing the environment and, in turn, architecture to be modified. It dislocates real space from that represented. It is very clear to observe the fact, which we have surely all experienced, in which the architectural space that contains us vanishes to be replaced by the spatial alternative that the television offers us.
